NextGen CM/ECF Registration Information

On March 14, 2022, the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Tennessee upgraded its Case Management/Electronic Case Filing (CM/ECF) System (CurrentGen) to the Next Generation of CM/ECF (NextGen). This upgrade provides users with several benefits including Central Sign-On, which allows e-filing attorneys to use one PACER login and password to access any NextGen court (district, appellate and bankruptcy) in which they practice.

New to NextGen CM/ECF? - What You Need to Do

1. Obtain Your Own PACER Account, if you do not already have one.
Attorneys must have their own PACER accounts. Shared PACER accounts will no longer be useable.  If you already have your own PACER account, then proceed to Step 2.

To register for a new PACER account, click on the following link:

Firms may set up a PACER Administrative Account to help manage attorney/limited user accounts and have those individual accounts centrally billed for PACER access fees. Complete information regarding PACER Administrative Accounts (PAAs) can be found here:

CJA Panel Attorneys will need only one PACER account for filing and viewing in NextGen. If you have a separate exempt CJA account now, those exempt privileges will need to be added to your individual upgraded PACER account.
2. Upgrade Your Existing PACER Account
If you have your own individual PACER account and it was created prior to August 11, 2014 (also known as a Legacy account), you must upgrade your account before you can electronically file in a NextGen court.

Q: How do I know if I have an upgraded PACER account?
A: Upgraded PACER accounts have usernames with at least 8 characters. If your username is 6 characters, you do not have an upgraded account.
After reviewing the above instructions, click here to manage your account:
Questions regarding your PACER account should be directed to PACER at pacer@psc.uscourts.gov or by calling (800) 676-6856. Answers to frequently asked questions may be found at https://www.pacer.gov/nextgen.

3. Make Note of the CM/ECF Login User ID and Password Which You are Currently Using
Do not rely upon your login information being saved in your web browser. It will be lost and not recoverable once the court goes live with NextGen. If you do not know your CurrentGen User ID contact the TNMD CM/ECF Help Desk at 615-695-2888.  If you know your User ID but need to reset your password, you can do so here:

For any other questions, please call the TNMD CM/ECF Help Desk at 615-695-2888.

What Happens Next?

You must link your upgraded PACER account to your TNMD NextGen CM/ECF account. Users will NOT be able to file in NextGen until their CM/ECF accounts are linked to their upgraded individual PACER accounts.  Please see the link below for detailed instructions.
